NEW DELHI, 28 June 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread heavy rainfall warnings for the coming week as the monsoon strengthens across several parts of the country. Multiple weather systems, including cyclonic circulations and a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, are set to enhance monsoon currents and intensify rainfall, the agency said.

In western India, extremely heavy showers are likely over Saurashtra on June 28, while Konkan, Goa, and the ghat regions of Maharashtra and Gujarat may experience persistent heavy to very heavy rainfall till July 3.

Northwest India is also expected to witness a significant surge in monsoon activity. Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh are forecast to receive isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall through the week, with Himachal and Punjab likely to see intense spells on June 29. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph and thunderstorms are expected to accompany these rains.

Over east and central India, the formation of a low-pressure system over the north Bay of Bengal by June 30 is likely to trigger substantial downpours in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal from June 28 to July 3. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph, with lightning activity expected across the region.

The northeastern states will continue to see a wet spell, with Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland forecast to receive very heavy rain on isolated days, while other areas will experience moderate showers and thunderstorms through the week.

Southern India, too, will remain under active monsoon conditions. Heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and coastal Karnataka, accompanied by strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph.

In Delhi-NCR, rain activity is set to gradually pick up from June 28 to June 30, with cloudy skies and a drop in maximum temperatures by 3–5 degrees Celsius, offering relief from the pre-monsoon heat. Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected, particularly during the evenings.

IMD has urged residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas to stay alert and follow local advisories, as waterlogging and travel disruptions are possible.
