SINGAPORE, 22 May 2025: Singapore’s renowned food scene is getting a nutritious makeover with the launch of #BeansOnTheMenu Singapore, a year-long initiative inviting restaurants, hotels, cafés, schools, and hospitals to feature pulse-based dishes—turning humble beans into culinary stars with big environmental and health benefits.
Launched at Pulses 25, the global pulse industry summit, this campaign is a joint effort by the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC), the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), and Beans is How, aiming to integrate pulses like beans, lentils, and peas into everyday menus citywide while tracking their positive impact.
Participating food service providers will commit to:
Adding at least one labelled pulse-based main dish to their menus
Tracking customer response through sales or volume data
Sharing success stories to inspire others in the industry
Early adopters include SUPERSIMPLE, a café known for clean, plant-forward dishes, and abillion, a global platform promoting sustainable dining. Both brands exemplify the campaign’s dual mission: flavor and future-focused dining.
Why Beans?
Pulses offer immense benefits that align with Singapore’s goals in public health, food security, and sustainability:
Culinary Creativity: Versatile and culturally relevant, pulses suit everything from fusion to heritage cuisine.
Health Boost: Rich in plant-based protein, fibre, and iron, they’re naturally low in fat and cholesterol-free.
Food Security: With 90% of Singapore’s food imported, shelf-stable, affordable pulses offer a resilient alternative.
Eco-Friendly: Pulses use less water, enrich soil, and are among the most climate-resilient crops globally.
The campaign will formally roll out at a Stakeholder Roundtable at Pulses 25, where hospitality, retail, and policy leaders will pledge support and shape the program’s roadmap.
“Beans are a gateway to transforming food systems – from the soil to the plate,” said Paul Newnham, CEO of SDG2 Advocacy Hub. “#BeansOnTheMenu celebrates culinary creativity while advancing a future where sustainable, delicious food is the norm.”
Vijay Iyengar, President of the Global Pulse Confederation, added, “We’re thrilled to bring this focus to Singapore, coinciding with our Pulses 25 convention. It’s a unique opportunity to boost pulse consumption globally.”
“At SUPERSIMPLE, our commitment goes beyond nutrition,” said Jasper Jek, Managing Partner and Executive Chef. “With #BeansOnTheMenu, we’re proud to offer meals that are both good for you and the planet.”
#BeansOnTheMenu Singapore is more than a food campaign—it’s a movement to reimagine dining through the lens of sustainability, innovation, and wellness, placing Singapore at the forefront of future-forward food systems.
