NEW DELHI, 14 November 2025: BASF said on Thursday it has begun supplying locally manufactured Ultradur® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) specialty grades in India, a move aimed at meeting growing demand for high-performance engineering plastics in automotive and electronics applications.
The new domestic availability includes flame-retardant (FR) and hydrolysis-resistant (HR) grades, which the company said will reduce lead times, improve supply reliability and offer greater flexibility to Indian customers. Previously, several specialty grades of Ultradur were imported.
“The new localized supply of Ultradur is a strategic step that enhances our ability to serve Indian customers with speed and agility,” said Andy Postlethwaite, senior vice president of Performance Materials Asia Pacific at BASF. He added that the expansion underscores BASF’s confidence in India’s industrial growth.
Ultradur PBT is known for dimensional stability, mechanical strength, rigidity and resistance to heat, chemicals and weathering. The material’s low moisture absorption and favourable processing characteristics make it suitable for precision engineering components.
The company said FR and HR variants offer enhanced flame retardancy and long-term durability, making them key materials for electric vehicles, electronic connectors and industrial parts.
Ultradur is BASF’s brand for partially crystalline, thermoplastic saturated polyesters derived from PBT, widely used in engineering applications requiring high performance and safety compliance.
