NEW DELHI, 28 May 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, has forecast above-normal rainfall for the upcoming 2025 Southwest Monsoon season (June–September), offering a promising outlook for agriculture and water resource management across India.

According to IMD’s updated Long-Range Forecast, rainfall across the country is projected to be 106% of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a model error margin of ±4%. This indicates a high probability of above-normal rainfall, driven by favourable oceanic and atmospheric conditions.

Regionally, Central India and the South Peninsular region are likely to receive above-normal rainfall, while Northwest India is expected to see normal rainfall levels (92–108% of LPA). On the other hand, Northeast India is forecast to experience below-normal rainfall, receiving less than 94% of the LPA.

The Monsoon Core Zone (MCZ)—which supports the bulk of India’s rainfed agriculture—is also likely to see above-normal precipitation, improving the prospects for the Kharif sowing season.

Looking specifically at June 2025, the IMD predicts above-normal rainfall (>108% of LPA) across most regions. However, certain areas in southern Peninsular India, Northwest India, and Northeast India may witness below-normal rainfall during the month.

On the temperature front, normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely across much of the country. However, above-normal daytime temperatures are expected in many parts of Northwest and Northeast India. Minimum temperatures, meanwhile, are forecast to stay above normal across most areas, with the exception of Central India and southern Peninsular regions, where normal to below-normal night temperatures are expected.

The IMD will continue to update its forecasts to aid agricultural planning, water management, and disaster preparedness in the coming months.
