RATNAGIRI, 27 April 2024: India, the undisputed land of mangoes, boasts hundreds of varieties, each with its unique flavor, aroma, and texture. But amidst this delightful abundance lies a select group – the crown jewels of the mango world – known for their exorbitant price tags and unmatched quality.

Let's embark on a journey to discover the top 10 most expensive mangoes India has to offer.

1. Miyazaki Mango: Hailing from the misty hills of Kashmir, the Miyazaki mango is a recent entrant in the luxury fruit market. This Japanese variety, grown under strict conditions, boasts a vibrant red flesh with an intensely sweet flavor, justifying its price tag, which can reach a staggering ₹3 lakh per kilogram.

2. Kohitur Mango: This crown jewel of West Bengal, traditionally reserved for royalty, is renowned for its creamy texture and unparalleled sweetness. Cultivated in the Malda district using specific techniques, Kohitur mangoes can fetch a price of ₹1,500-₹2,000 each, making them a true symbol of opulence.

3. Alphonso Mango: Often referred to as the "King of Mangoes," Alphonso mangoes, grown in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, are celebrated for their distinct sweetness, vibrant yellow skin with a red blush, and a captivating aroma. While not the most expensive on this list, Alphonso mangoes command a premium price, ranging from ₹1,000-₹2,000 per dozen, depending on their quality and size.

4. Dasheri Mango: Cultivated in the fertile plains of Malihabad, Uttar Pradesh, Dasheri mangoes are known for their elongated shape, bright yellow skin with a red blush, and a unique fiberless pulp. These delectable mangoes boast a perfect balance of sweetness and a hint of tartness, fetching a price of around ₹500-₹1,000 per dozen.

5. Neelam Mango: Widely grown in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, Neelam mangoes are prized for their vibrant yellow skin and a delightful blend of sweetness and tanginess. Their juicy pulp and refreshing flavor make them a popular choice, with prices ranging from ₹300-₹500 per dozen.

6. Langra Mango: Originating from the Varanasi and Bihar regions, Langra mangoes are known for their medium size, greenish-yellow skin, and a unique combination of sweetness and a subtle tang. These juicy and flavorful mangoes are priced around ₹200-₹400 per dozen.

7. Ratnagiri Mango: Sharing the name of its illustrious birthplace, Ratnagiri mangoes are a testament to the exceptional quality of mangoes grown in the Ratnagiri district. These mangoes are known for their distinct sweetness, juicy pulp, and a unique flavor profile, commanding a price of ₹200-₹400 per dozen.

8. Chausa Mango: Cultivated primarily in the Kurukshetra region of Haryana, Chausa mangoes are known for their large size, oblong shape, and a golden yellow skin. The flesh is exceptionally sweet and juicy, with a fibrous texture. These mangoes are priced around ₹150-₹300 per dozen.

9. Banganapalle Mango: Widely grown in Andhra Pradesh, Banganapalle mangoes, also known as Safeda mangoes, are known for their pale yellow skin and a sweet, mildly acidic flavor. The flesh is firm and juicy, making them a versatile choice for both eating fresh and processing. Banganapalle mangoes are priced around ₹100-₹200 per dozen.

10. Dussehri Mango: Cultivated extensively in Lucknow and Malihabad, Uttar Pradesh, Dussehri mangoes are a popular choice during the festive season of Dussehra. These medium-sized mangoes boast a bright yellow skin with a red blush and a sweet, mildly fibrous pulp. Dussehri mangoes are relatively affordable, priced around ₹80-₹150 per dozen.

The allure of these expensive mangoes lies not just in their taste but also in their exclusivity, limited availability, and the meticulous care taken during cultivation. As with any luxury product, these mangoes cater to a niche market of connoisseurs and those seeking a truly unique taste experience.
