NEW DELHI, 2 April 2024: India, with its diverse climatic conditions, is a major producer of a variety of vegetables, one of which is beetroot. This vibrant and versatile vegetable is known for its earthy flavour and aroma, and is often referred to as a super food due to its rich nutritional profile.

Leading Beetroot Producers

As per the data for the year 2022-23, the top beetroot producing states in India are Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh. These states have leveraged their favourable climatic conditions to cultivate this nutritious crop. Other states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Punjab also contribute to the beetroot production, albeit in smaller quantities.

Maharashtra

Maharashtra leads the pack in beetroot production. The state’s diverse climate and fertile soil provide an ideal environment for beetroot cultivation.

Haryana

Haryana, known for its agricultural prowess, is another major beetroot producer. The state’s farmers have adopted modern farming techniques to increase their beetroot yield.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, one of the largest states in India, also contributes significantly to the country’s beetroot production. The state’s vast agricultural land is well-utilized for growing this nutritious vegetable.

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh, despite its hilly terrain, has managed to cultivate beetroot successfully. The cool climate of the state is particularly suitable for beetroot cultivation.

Health Benefits of Beetroot

Beetroots are not just known for their vibrant colour, but also for their numerous health benefits. They are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds, many of which have medicinal properties.

Nutrient-Rich

Beetroots are low in calories yet high in valuable vitamins and minerals. They contain a bit of almost all the vitamins and minerals your body needs. They are particularly rich in folate, a vitamin that plays a key role in growth, development, and heart health.

Blood Pressure Control

Beetroots have been well studied for their ability to decrease elevated blood pressure levels, a major risk factor for heart disease. The high concentration of nitrates in beetroot is converted into nitric oxide in the body, which dilates blood vessels and causes blood pressure levels to drop.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Beetroots are one of the few vegetables that contain betalains, a powerful antioxidant that gives beets their vibrant colour. Betalains reduce inflammation and may help protect against cancer and other diseases.

In conclusion, beetroot is a valuable crop cultivated in various states of India, with numerous health benefits making it a super food. As we continue to discover more about this versatile vegetable, its cultivation is likely to spread to other parts of the country, contributing to the health and well-being of the population.
