NEW DELHI, 3 March 2026: The introduction of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices has significantly improved the livelihoods of fishing communities in Car Nicobar, enabling safer navigation and more efficient fishing practices.

Traditionally dependent on experiential knowledge and vulnerable to unpredictable sea and weather conditions, Nicobarese fishers often faced productivity losses and safety risks due to the absence of precise navigation tools.

Technology Intervention Under DST Programme

To address these challenges, the Central Island Technological Research Institute introduced GPS devices tailored to local marine conditions under the SEED Division programme of the Department of Science and Technology.

The initiative included:

  • Distribution of 10 GPS devices (5 provided directly to tribal fishers and 5 kept for shared use)
  • Training on GPS navigation and modern fishing techniques
  • Needs assessment surveys to support technology adoption
  • Promotion of adoption through the Tribal Council

A Coastal Fisheries Information Hub has also been established on Car Nicobar Island to strengthen long-term technical support.

Higher Catch, Better Nutrition, Improved Income

The use of GPS technology has enabled fishers to precisely mark productive fishing grounds, reducing time spent at sea while increasing catch volumes. According to official data, daily catch volumes have increased by an average of approximately 168%.

This has translated into tangible livelihood gains. Fishers such as Mr. Junaid from Teetop village and Mr. Abdul Sattar from Chuchucha village have begun selling surplus catch in local markets, generating additional income.

The higher fish availability has also improved household nutrition by increasing access to fresh protein and essential nutrients. Improved incomes are enabling families to diversify food sources, contributing to better overall health outcomes.

Safer and More Sustainable Fishing

Beyond productivity gains, GPS devices have reduced the risk of boats losing direction during weather disturbances, enhancing safety for fishing communities whose primary livelihood depends on marine resources.

The intervention demonstrates how targeted technology deployment in remote island regions can deliver measurable socio-economic and nutritional benefits while strengthening resilience among traditional communities.
