YOKOHAMA / Japan, 20 August 2025: NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen development assistance in Africa. The agreement, announced on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9), seeks to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The collaboration will focus on agriculture and global health, with technology playing a central role in improving efficiency and effectiveness. NEC and WFP have previously worked together on farmland monitoring in Ethiopia and Zambia through the CropScope agricultural ICT platform, as well as maternal and child nutrition programmes in Ghana using a digital health checkup mobile application.
The MoC aims to enhance these tools, while expanding the scope of cooperation to support resilient, inclusive societies across Africa. NEC said the partnership will contribute to food security, sustainable farming practices, and improved healthcare delivery in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
WFP, established in 1961, is the UN’s humanitarian agency focused on eradicating hunger, and in 2024 it delivered food assistance to 124 million people worldwide. The agency has stressed the importance of adopting technology to meet rising needs amid conflicts, climate shocks, and pandemics.
NEC will also showcase its agricultural and health technologies at TICAD 9, being held from August 20–22, 2025, at Pacifico Yokohama. The company will host seminars and exhibitions under the “TICAD Business Expo and Conference” and the Japan Fair, highlighting its commitment to co-creating social value through digital innovation.
