MUMBAI, 23 April 2024: In a landmark policy shift, the Maharashtra government has officially granted agricultural status to the fisheries sector, a move that is set to revolutionize the lives of more than 4.83 lakh fishermen across the state.

The decision, announced after a cabinet meeting, was led by Minister of Port and Fisheries Nitesh Rane, who emphasized the sector’s untapped potential for high yield and profitability, akin to traditional agriculture. “This step will bridge the long-standing gap between farmers and fisherfolk in terms of state support,” Rane stated.

With the new classification, fishers, breeders, and aqua farmers will now have access to a broad spectrum of agricultural subsidies and development schemes. These include government support for essentials like fish seeds, quality feed, paddlewheel aerators, and air pumps. In addition, the state will extend financial assistance for setting up cold storage units and ice factories, strengthening the supply chain for marine produce.

In a parallel to the crop insurance schemes available to farmers, the government also plans to launch a fisheries insurance program to cover losses related to fish seed and fish stock due to diseases or natural disasters such as floods and droughts. This insurance will bring a much-needed safety net to vulnerable fishing communities.

The sector will now also benefit from agricultural electricity rates, subsidies on power usage, and access to Kisan Credit Cards, opening doors to low-interest loans and affordable insurance. Rane highlighted that this inclusive approach will stimulate rural economic growth, create new jobs, and strengthen both coastal and inland fish economies.

The announcement marks a pivotal shift in Maharashtra’s rural development strategy and is expected to enhance the overall competitiveness, income security, and resilience of the fishing sector.
