MUMBAI, 22 July 2026: The Centre has approved fisheries development projects worth INR 1,601.44 crore for Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with a Central share of INR 593.33 crore, supporting infrastructure development, fish production and employment generation across the state.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) said that between 2020-21 and 2026-27, the Centre released INR 419.02 crore to Maharashtra, of which the state has utilised INR 408.77 crore.
The Department of Fisheries reviews PMMSY implementation regularly through physical and virtual meetings, field inspections and a dedicated digital monitoring platform.
According to the Maharashtra government, 3,714 beneficiary-oriented projects are currently active under PMMSY. Of these, 2,856 projects have been fully completed, generating 15,763 direct jobs and 19,528 indirect employment opportunities. Additional employment is expected as the remaining projects are completed.
The approved projects cover a wide range of interventions, including fish production, infrastructure development, cold chain facilities, marketing, resource sustainability and fishers' welfare.
Key infrastructure projects
Under PMMSY, Maharashtra has developed or is implementing:
- Six Fish Landing Centres (FLCs) at Tara-Mumbri and Shiroda (Sindhudurg), Palashet and Dabhol (Ratnagiri), and Korlai and Revdanda (Raigad).
- Three modern fish markets at Sangli, Chandrapur and Nagpur.
- A modern international wholesale fish market at Marol, Mumbai.
- Dredging works at 13 fish landing centres across Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad to improve navigability and fishing operations.
- Installation of 182 artificial reef structures across Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg to enhance marine fish habitats and improve fish stocks.
- Integrated reservoir fisheries development projects at Arunavati Reservoir (Yavatmal) and Dimbhe Reservoir (Pune).
The government said these investments are expected to strengthen Maharashtra's fisheries value chain, improve fish production and marketing infrastructure, and enhance the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities across the state.
