NEW DELHI, 16 July 2025: India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to agricultural cooperation during the 2nd Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on agriculture held this week. The bilateral session was co-chaired by Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare (DA&FW), and Mr. Sergio Iraeta, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Argentina.
Attended by senior officials from both nations, including representatives from ICAR, Ministry of External Affairs, and Department of Animal Husbandry, the meeting focused on joint research, mechanisation, genome technologies, and climate-resilient farming.
Chaturvedi highlighted Argentina’s strategic importance as a partner in India’s agri-development framework. “Our collaboration is based on mutual knowledge-sharing that enhances both productivity and farmer welfare,” he said, adding that digital innovation and pest management were promising areas for cooperation.
Iraeta expressed Argentina’s eagerness to expand cooperation in plant breeding, genome editing, and precision agriculture. He noted that both countries could complement each other’s strengths to address global challenges such as food security, sustainability, and climate change.
The working group addressed key domains including:
- Value chain development for oilseeds and pulses
- Access to carbon credits for farmers
- Biopesticide innovation and locust control
- Strengthening market access and new breeding technologies
Muktanand Agrawal, Joint Secretary (Plant Protection), also provided a detailed presentation on India’s achievements in digital agriculture, risk mitigation tools, and climate-smart policies.
Officials agreed to develop a time-bound framework for action and emphasized institutional collaboration for knowledge exchange and joint R&D.
The meeting was hailed as a key milestone in India–Argentina agricultural relations, laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration across the Global South.
