KYRGYZSTAN, 29 June 2025: Kyrgyzstan has announced an ambitious plan to transition its Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions fully to organic farming by 2029 as part of the national “Organic 2025–2029” program.
Speaking at the 4th Organization of Turkic States (OTS) Agriculture Ministers Meeting in Issyk-Kul, Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, underlined agriculture’s vital role in Kyrgyzstan’s economy and food security.
“Agriculture accounts for nearly 9% of Kyrgyzstan’s GDP and provides employment to 28% of our population,” Torobaev stated. He highlighted Kyrgyzstan’s readiness to expand agricultural exports to OTS member countries, showcasing potatoes, cabbage, onions, carrots, melons, fruits, and vegetables as key products.
The organic farming initiative aims to convert 200,000 hectares to organic cultivation by 2029, aligning with the OTS mission to encourage environmentally sustainable farming methods.
Torobaev also noted that Kyrgyzstan’s agricultural output is naturally clean thanks to the country’s advantageous agro-climatic conditions, mountain pastures fed by glacial water, and fertile soils.
The transition is expected to improve export potential, strengthen rural incomes, and support eco-friendly agriculture, positioning Kyrgyzstan as a leader in sustainable farming practices across Central Asia.
