LUCKNOW, 2 June 2025: Uttar Pradesh has recorded a significant surge in the output of its livestock, fisheries, and forestry sectors during the financial year 2023–24, according to the latest District Domestic Product (DDP) Estimates report.
Released by the State Directorate of Economics and Statistics and the Planning Department, the report indicates robust growth in the state’s traditional rural economy.
The state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) stood at INR 25.63 lakh crore, with the livestock sector alone contributing INR 1.67 lakh crore — 7.1% of the Gross State Value Added (GSVA).
Livestock Sector: Leading Contributor to Rural Economy
The livestock sector saw strong performance, driven primarily by milk production, which accounted for a staggering 83.3% of livestock GVA. Uttar Pradesh retained its position as India’s top milk producer, generating 388 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of milk in FY24 — a 7% increase from the previous year. The state now contributes 16.2% of the national milk output.

Fastest-growing districts in livestock GVA include Mahoba (42.1%), Jhansi (41.1%), and Ambedkar Nagar (36.2%).
Egg production also surged by 29.9%, increasing the state’s national contribution from 3.29% to 4.15%.
Fisheries Sector: 34.1% Growth in FY24
The fisheries sector grew by 34.1%, contributing ₹19,071 crore to the GSVA. Total inland fish production rose to 11.56 lakh MT, representing 26.4% growth. Uttar Pradesh now contributes 8.3% to India’s total inland fish production.

Forestry Sector: Key Contributor in Green Economy
The forestry sector added INR 25,859 crore to the state economy, showing a 3.9% growth year-over-year. The sector's contribution highlights UP’s efforts to leverage natural resources for economic gains.

Officials say the growth underscores the government’s rural development focus, investments in agri-allied activities, and livelihood diversification programs. The report also points to better market linkages, infrastructure, and extension services in livestock and fisheries as key drivers of growth.
