NEW DELHI, 15 July 2025: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has reported significant progress in livestock development and animal health management, contributing directly to increased productivity and food security in India. The latest data reveals substantial growth in milk, meat, and egg production, as well as the rollout of new technologies in veterinary science and animal genetics.
According to ICAR, milk, meat, and egg production increased by:
- 9 million tonnes (3.78%) in milk,
- 0.48 million tonnes (4.95%) in meat, and
- 5 billion eggs (3.18%) over the past year.
These gains underscore the resilience and potential of India's livestock sector, which supports millions of rural livelihoods and plays a crucial role in the nation's nutritional and economic security.
Key Contributions by ICAR:
- Registration of 10 indigenous animal breeds, preserving India's rich livestock biodiversity.
- 5 new vaccines developed to prevent major animal diseases.
- 7 diagnostic tools created, enhancing early disease detection and animal health outcomes.
- 6.11 lakh doses of semen produced, enabling large-scale genetic improvement.
- 14.09 lakh poultry germplasm units distributed to promote superior poultry strains.
- Two new chicken varieties released, tailored for diverse agro-climatic conditions.
Technology and Innovation in Animal Health
ICAR is also leading the digital transformation of India’s veterinary ecosystem with innovations such as:
An AI and IoT-based Smart Veterinary Ecosystem, enabling real-time health tracking and data-driven decision-making.
Deployment of smart sensors for real-time quality assessment of dairy products, helping ensure milk safety and traceability.
Launch of feeding modules using phytogenic (plant-based) feed additives, which enhance animal health and reduce antibiotic dependence.
These innovations not only support sustainable livestock farming but also align with India's commitments under the One Health framework, which links animal, human, and environmental health.
National and Global Relevance
The livestock sector contributes nearly 4.5% to India’s GDP and over 25% to the agricultural GDP. As per the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries, India remains the largest producer of milk globally, and one of the top producers of meat and poultry products.
ICAR’s achievements reflect the broader push under the National Livestock Mission and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which aim to promote indigenous breeds, reduce disease burdens, and improve productivity through science and innovation.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICAR, said, “The future of food security depends on the health and sustainability of our livestock sector. Through focused research, digital innovation, and farmer engagement, ICAR is committed to making India’s livestock systems more productive, climate-resilient, and globally competitive.”
