NEW DELHI, 23 July 2026: India's fish production has increased by 39.61% over the last five years, while fisheries exports have grown by 58.34%, driven by investments under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the Centre informed Parliament.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) said PMMSY, launched in 2020-21, is the government's flagship programme for the holistic development of the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
According to the ministry, fish production rose from 141.64 lakh tonnes in 2019-20 to 197.75 lakh tonnes in 2024-25, while the value of fisheries exports increased from INR 46,666 crore in 2019-20 to INR 73,890 crore in 2025-26.
The Centre said there is no disparity in the allocation of PMMSY funds among states and Union Territories. Annual allocations are made based on factors including the overall budgetary allocation, states' performance, fund absorption capacity, physical and financial progress, and liabilities arising from projects approved in previous years.
The government has also developed a PMMSY Management Information System (MIS) as a centralised digital platform to monitor fisheries projects across districts and states. The portal enables real-time tracking of project implementation, while regular advisories, review meetings and field visits are conducted to improve fund utilisation and ensure timely execution of projects.
The ministry said the fisheries development initiatives under PMMSY have contributed to higher production, improved productivity and stronger export performance, supporting the growth of India's fisheries and aquaculture sector.
