THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, 20 August 2026: The Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) Regional Centre at Vizhinjam has completed 30 years of bringing visitors closer to the fascinating world of marine life.

Established in 1996, the Sagarika aquarium has evolved into a centre that combines marine research, education and conservation while offering the public an opportunity to experience the rich biodiversity of the Indian seas.

The aquarium currently showcases more than 80 species of marine organisms, providing visitors with a glimpse into the diversity of life found beneath the ocean surface.

More than 80 marine species on display

Colourful ornamental fishes are among the major attractions at Sagarika. Visitors can also observe several other marine organisms, including sharks, rays, sea anemones, sea urchins, marine shrimps, crabs and lobsters.

The displays allow visitors to observe marine organisms at close quarters while learning about the different forms of marine life and the importance of maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.

The aquarium's exhibits are designed to make marine biodiversity easier to understand, particularly for young visitors and students.

Educational destination for children and families

Sagarika has become particularly popular among children, students, families and nature enthusiasts. By bringing marine organisms into an accessible educational setting, the aquarium provides an opportunity to learn about the ocean beyond textbooks and classrooms.

The facility also helps create greater awareness about marine biodiversity and the need for conservation of ocean ecosystems.

For visitors interested in marine life, the aquarium offers a combination of recreation and education, making it a family-friendly destination in the Vizhinjam area.

Sagarika Aquarium timings and entry fee

With the Onam holidays approaching, Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium is expected to attract families and students looking for an educational outing.

The aquarium is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

The entry fee is ₹40 for adults and ₹20 for children.

As Sagarika marks three decades, its continued role in marine education and public awareness highlights the importance of creating accessible spaces where people can learn about India's diverse marine ecosystems.

The 30-year-old aquarium remains an important attraction at Vizhinjam, connecting visitors with the underwater world while promoting greater appreciation for marine biodiversity and conservation.
