DOHA / Qatat, 11 November 2025: Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), marketer of the Amul brand, has been ranked No. 1 cooperative in the world based on GDP per capita performance by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) World Cooperative Monitor 2025. The announcement was made at the ICA CM50 Conference in Doha, Qatar, marking a significant milestone in the International Year of Cooperatives 2025.

The recognition highlights Amul’s contribution to empowering millions of dairy farmers through a time-tested cooperative model that fosters inclusive growth, gender equality, and sustainable rural development.

The ICA, headquartered in Brussels, represents cooperatives globally and promotes sustainable business practices. Its annual World Cooperative Monitor, developed with EURICSE (European Research Institute on Cooperative and Social Enterprises), evaluates the economic and social impact of leading cooperatives worldwide. Amul’s top ranking underscores its consistent growth, innovation, and people-first governance in an increasingly competitive global dairy market.

Dr. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director, GCMMF (Amul), said, “Amul is a brand owned and managed entirely by farmers. Our model extends beyond economics — it embodies trust, community, and sustainability. This recognition reaffirms the enduring strength of India’s cooperative movement and honors the vision of our founders who built prosperity through collective enterprise.”

Dr. Mehta also expressed gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Hon’ble Union Home & Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah for their leadership in strengthening India’s cooperative ecosystem, enabling institutions like Amul to thrive globally.

Amul’s three-tier cooperative structure spans over 18,600 village-level cooperatives and 3.6 million milk producers, the majority being women. This grassroots network has transformed India from a milk-deficient nation to the world’s largest milk producer, contributing to rural livelihoods, nutrition security, and the national economy.

At the same event, world leaders at the Second UN Social Summit 2025 in Doha adopted a declaration recognizing the pivotal role of cooperatives in eradicating poverty, creating employment, and fostering social transformation. The International Year of Cooperatives 2025 was officially concluded with a resolution to commemorate it once every decade.
