NEW DELHI, 10 July 2026: In a major relief measure for farmers, the Centre has approved the procurement of 87,226 metric tonnes (MT) of copra and 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes in Tamil Nadu to ensure better price realisation and protect growers from distress sales.

The approvals were granted by Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan following proposals submitted by the Tamil Nadu government.

Under the Price Support Scheme (PSS), the Centre has approved the procurement of 87,226 MT of copra, comprising 87,000 MT of milling copra and 226 MT of ball copra, at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

The total MSP value of the approved copra procurement exceeds INR 1,049.16 crore, providing significant financial support to coconut growers across the state.

Officials said the procurement will help farmers receive remunerative prices while protecting them against market fluctuations and distress sales caused by falling prices.

In a separate decision, the Centre also approved the procurement of 96,879 MT of Totapuri mangoes under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS).

The Market Intervention Price (MIP) has been fixed at INR 1,545.41 per quintal, ensuring that Totapuri mango growers receive fair compensation for their produce during the marketing season.

The intervention is expected to stabilise market prices, strengthen farmer incomes, and prevent losses arising from sudden price declines.

The Ministry of Agriculture said the twin procurement decisions would provide substantial relief to farmers in Tamil Nadu while reinforcing the government's commitment to safeguarding agricultural incomes through timely market interventions.

The Centre noted that such procurement initiatives play a vital role in strengthening the rural economy, ensuring income security for farmers, and boosting confidence in the agricultural sector.
