BRAZILIA / Brazil, 2 July 2025: President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday signed a decree establishing the National Programme for the Reduction of Pesticides (Pronara), aimed at promoting healthier, more sustainable food production among Brazil’s family farmers.

The initiative, which combines research, information, residue monitoring, technical assistance, rural extension services, and bio-inputs, is designed to gradually reduce pesticide use across the country’s agricultural sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Kelli Mafort, Executive Secretary of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, described the move as a “historic milestone in the fight to reduce pesticides,” noting that Pronara is the result of a decade-long push by farmers, social movements, and agroecology advocates.

She emphasized that effective implementation of the program’s measures would be the government’s next priority. The federal government will coordinate Pronara’s rollout to support long-term sustainable agriculture practices, she added.
