BHUBANAESWAR, 17 May 2025: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday underscored the urgent need for Odisha to diversify its economy beyond agriculture by boosting the manufacturing sector, asserting that inclusive growth can only be achieved through a well-rounded economic approach.

Speaking at the 70th foundation day celebration of the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), Majhi said the state government is committed to building a mixed economy that benefits all sections of society.

"Odisha possesses abundant raw materials essential for large-scale manufacturing. Unfortunately, previous governments failed to capitalise on this industrial potential. Our government is now focused on value addition to mineral resources to unlock economic growth," Majhi said.

Praising the OMC’s significant role in Odisha’s development, he noted its evolution from a modest start in the 1960s to becoming one of the top five mineral producers in India, with a projected turnover of ₹23,600 crore in 2024-25.

“OMC has not only ensured responsible mining but also generated substantial revenue and employment. It stands as a model state PSU, contributing to Odisha’s prosperity,” he added.

Highlighting the state's industrial push, Majhi cited the Steel and Mines Department’s e-auction platform, which now enables industries to meet over 80% of their raw material needs, facilitating smoother operations and fostering investment.

He also took the opportunity to thank the state’s workforce, calling them “the backbone of Odisha’s development journey.”

Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, who also addressed the event, echoed the chief minister’s sentiments and said OMC has played a transformational role in reshaping Odisha’s industrial landscape.
