BENGALURU, 25 June 2025: In a major relief for mango farmers in southern Karnataka, the Union Government has approved the procurement of up to 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes at a rate of ₹1,616 per quintal under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025–26 marketing season.
The decision comes in response to widespread distress caused by a sharp fall in mango prices, which left thousands of growers vulnerable to financial losses. The intervention follows appeals from Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Confirming the approval, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated in an official letter:
“Under the Market Intervention Scheme on mango for the marketing year 2025–26 in the state of Karnataka, the maximum quantity of 2,50,000 tonnes at the rate of ₹1,616 per quintal has been approved.”
The move aims to stabilize prices, prevent distress sales, and provide fair returns to farmers, especially in mango-growing belts of southern Karnataka.
Expressing gratitude, H.D. Kumaraswamy posted on X (formerly Twitter): “My heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi avaru for the unwavering and farmer-centric commitment of his government, which has swiftly come to the aid of Karnataka’s mango growers.”
He also praised Agriculture Minister Chouhan for the timely response to his request, adding that the announcement offers hope to thousands of distressed farmers.
“This intervention once again proves that under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi avaru, farmers can always count on assured and fair pricing for their produce.”
The approval under the MIS is expected to provide financial stability to farmers, enabling them to recover from market losses and plan effectively for the next crop cycle. The scheme allows state governments to partner with the Centre to procure perishable crops when prices fall below a threshold, thereby protecting farmers from market volatility.
With mango being a key horticulture crop in Karnataka, this timely intervention not only offers immediate relief but also restores confidence in institutional support mechanisms for agriculture.
