BHUBANESWAR, 1 May 2024: Often overshadowed by its white cousin, the sweet potato is quietly making a comeback in India. Packed with vitamins and boasting a naturally sweet flavor, this versatile crop is gaining popularity among health-conscious consumers.

But where exactly are these "red rubies" grown? Let's explore the top 10 sweet potato producing states in India for 2023, their contribution, and how Indian farmers can tap into the global sweet potato market by 2034.

Odisha: The King of Candied Yams

Odisha reigns supreme as the king of sweet potato production in India. In 2023, estimates suggest the state produced a whopping 3,30,390 tonnes, accounting for a dominant 29.52% of the national sweet potato output. Odisha's success can be attributed to its suitable climate, fertile soil, and a long tradition of sweet potato cultivation.

Uttar Pradesh: A Sweet Surprise

Uttar Pradesh, the undisputed king of potato production, also makes a surprising appearance as the second-largest sweet potato producer. Estimates suggest the state produced around 2,54,250 tonnes in 2023, contributing a significant 22.7% share. This achievement highlights the state's diverse agricultural capabilities.

West Bengal: A Land of Sweet Traditions

West Bengal holds a strong position as the third-largest sweet potato producer, with an estimated 1,85,330 tonnes produced in 2023, accounting for roughly 16.56% of the national output. The state's long history of sweet potato cultivation and suitable growing conditions contribute to its success.

Madhya Pradesh: A Rising Star in Sweet Potatoes

Madhya Pradesh is emerging as a force to be reckoned with in sweet potato production. Estimates suggest the state produced around 94,560 tonnes in 2023, contributing a promising 8.5% share. Favorable growing conditions in certain regions and increasing farmer interest are propelling Madhya Pradesh's sweet potato production.

Chhattisgarh: A Sweet Neighbor

Chhattisgarh, bordering sweet potato powerhouse Odisha, also boasts a notable production. Estimates suggest the state produced around 53,890 tonnes in 2023, contributing roughly 5% to the national output. Chhattisgarh's potential for even higher production is undeniable, with similar climatic conditions to its neighbor.

The Sweet Six and Beyond: Notable Mentions

Several other states deserve recognition for their contribution to India's sweet potato scene. States like Karnataka, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Meghalaya, though not in the top six, are estimated to have collectively produced around 15-20% of the national sweet potato output in 2023. These states contribute significantly to fulfilling domestic demands and offer potential for future growth.

Outlook for 2034: A Sweet Global Opportunity

The global sweet potato market is projected to witness significant growth by 2034, driven by rising health consciousness and increasing demand for gluten-free products. This presents a golden opportunity for Indian sweet potato farmers. Here's how they can tap into this global market:

  • Focus on Quality and Certification: Meeting international quality standards and acquiring certifications like Global G.A.P. will enhance marketability and fetch premium prices.
  • Embrace New Varieties: Adopting high-yielding and disease-resistant sweet potato varieties will optimize production and cater to diverse global preferences.
  • Invest in Post-Harvest Management: Implementing proper storage and transportation facilities will minimize spoilage and ensure fresh, high-quality sweet potatoes reach global markets.
  • Explore Value-Added Products: Processing sweet potatoes into chips, flour, and other value-added products can increase profit margins and cater to a wider consumer base.

By adopting these strategies and leveraging government initiatives promoting sweet potato cultivation, Indian farmers can become major players in the global sweet potato market by 2034.
