PANJI, 21 October 2016 : In order to increase milk output in the state, Goa Dairy has announced the launch of protein rich cattle feed 'Supreme' in the state.
Announcing this, Goa industries minister, Mahadev Naik said that the new feed will help the state to meet some milk output, as it will provide more proper feed to cattle.
The minister also asked the youths of the state to take up dairy farming, as the daily requirement of 450,000 liters are meet by other states.
More proteins
'Supreme cattle feed contains 23 to 25 per cent protein as compared to 20 per cent protein found in earlier feeds, is meant for the high-yielding cattle that produce above 10 litres of milk per day.
There are many benefits in dairy farming in the state and all young entrepreneurs can avail this to excel forward, thereby meeting state's milk production demand by setting up own dairy farms.
Naik further informed that there are 169 primary dairy societies in Goa and added that the farmers need to be trained to increase the milk production.
Goa Dairy chairman Madhav Sahakari said, “In Goa, dairy farming does not prove to be financially rewarding. Milk production is like an addiction to the farmer, who despite losses, carry on with their activities. Goa Dairy is planning to provide better facilities to the farmers including cattle feed and other facilities."
More milk output
A cow can produce one litre of milk with a 300 grams dose of 'Supreme', as compared to the 500 grams of regular feed given for the same amount of milk, thereby cutting costs, Sawant adds.
The main reason is the cost of the feed. Deficiency and underfeeding further worsens the situation affecting the economics of dairy farms badly, Sawant stressed.
Sawant emphasized that the Supreme Cattle feed will help to enhance milk production.
$1800 prize money
Dr Santosh Desai declared that farmers achieving the highest milk production annually will be awarded a cash prize of $1800 (Rs 100,000) and a certificate.
Goa Dairy presently provides the feed which contains ingredients sourced from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh at a subsidized rate of 16.80 per kg to farmers.
Dr Santosh Desai, Veterinary Director, Ravi Lahane, Dr Aman Sayyad, Rajesh Parwar, Lahane, Pradeep Mahajan, Dr Navsu Sawanth, Directors of Goa Dairy and Animal Husbandry were present.
