BAREILLY, 31 May 2025: In a significant development for sugarcane farmers, Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi announced that the state has cleared 85 per cent of total cane dues owed to farmers.
The minister was speaking at a Kharif productivity workshop for the Bareilly and Moradabad divisions held at the Government Inter College auditorium in Bareilly recently.
"As of May 25, INR 29,903 crore out of INR 34,892 crore in cane payments has been disbursed," said Shahi, assuring farmers that the remaining dues would be settled at the earliest.
The minister also revealed that efforts are underway to set up a new sugar mill in Bareilly, adding to the state’s ongoing push to strengthen the agro-industrial ecosystem.
Highlighting a major boost in agricultural productivity, Shahi noted that sugarcane yield has improved significantly, rising from less than 600 quintals per hectare to 828 quintals per hectare. This increase reflects the combined impact of government schemes, better farming practices, and revival of sugar mills.
"Currently, 121 sugar mills are operational in the state, including 10 that have been revived recently," he added. These efforts are part of the state’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and ensuring timely farmer payments.
At the event, various departments set up informational stalls to educate farmers about government schemes, subsidies, and services. Shahi, accompanied by Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Ravindra Kumar, visited the stalls and interacted with officials and farmers.
The workshop aimed to prepare stakeholders for the upcoming Kharif cropping season, offering guidance on improving crop yield, soil health, and resource optimization.
