MUMBAI, 10 April 2025: In a significant boost to climate action in Asia, climate solutions platform Patch and carbon project developer Varaha have announced a multi-million dollar partnership aimed at scaling durable carbon removal initiatives across the region.
The collaboration has already supported over 100,000 smallholder farmers across South Asia, enabling regenerative agriculture, reforestation, and biochar projects across more than one million acres of land. To date, these efforts have removed over 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
Patch’s partnership with Varaha has attracted investment from more than 35 companies globally, including prominent carbon-neutral shipping company Sendle. The projects backed by these funds are expected to remove over 20 million tonnes of CO₂ over the next five years.
“This partnership demonstrates the real-world impact of high-integrity carbon removal solutions, which are set to play an increasingly critical role in global climate action,” said Brennan Spellacy, CEO and Co-founder of Patch.
One of the standout initiatives within the partnership is the world’s largest biochar project, which not only removes carbon but also combats invasive species and restores degraded grasslands. The project has engaged 4,000 smallholder farmers across 145 villages, generated part-time employment equivalent to 50,000 workdays, and distributed $2.19 million in carbon revenue to participating farmers.
In addition, the project has restored 4,000 hectares of grassland, reduced illegal logging and biomass burning by 100,000 tonnes, and boosted grassland vegetation growth by 31%.
Madhur Jain, CEO and Co-founder of Varaha, said the partnership was helping build a more transparent and efficient carbon market. “The projects that Patch has purchased carbon credits from are reaching more than 100,000 farmers across over one million acres of land in two Asian countries, and have already removed more than 1.5 million tons of CO₂,” Jain said.
For companies like Sendle, the partnership is a critical part of their climate responsibility strategy. “As pioneers in carbon-neutral shipping, Sendle is proud to support innovative carbon removal projects through our partnership with Patch and Varaha,” said Veena Harbaugh, Director of Sustainability at Sendle.
The partnership between Patch and Varaha is expected to play a growing role in channelling climate finance towards nature-based solutions — a critical step as global demand rises for high-quality carbon credits.
