Indian food ministry procures 34,546 tonnes of pulses

Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has said government agencies have procured 34546.69 tonnes of pulses during the ongoing 2016-17 Kharif Marketing Season (KMS).

Indian Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution has said government agencies have procured 34546.69 tonnes of pulses during the ongoing 2016-17 Kharif Marketing Season (KMS).

The ministry said the procurement includes moog and urad as on October 25, 2016.

Of the 34,546.69 tonnes, majority quantity of pulses, was procured by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) which purchased 23,510.13 tonnes, followed by Food Corporation of India (FCI) with 8166.71 tonnes and Small Farmers' Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) with 2869.85 tonnes.

FCI, NAFED and SFAC are procuring Kharif pulses from the farmers to ensure MSP for their crops in pulses producing states, the statement stressed.

The Government has set up the procurement target of 50,000 tonne Kharif pulses during current KMS for its buffer stock.
