ROPAR, 29 April 2025: In a groundbreaking step for India’s defense and aerospace sectors, IIT Ropar and AVPL International have launched the country’s first fully indigenous drone technology mission.
The collaboration aims to develop a complete, end-to-end “Made in India” drone ecosystem — including hardware, software, and AI integration — to eliminate dependence on foreign technology in the rapidly growing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sector.
The mission addresses a critical gap in India’s drone manufacturing landscape, which has so far relied extensively on imported components, raising concerns over data security, sovereignty, and operational reliability. With a strong focus on national security and technological self-reliance, the partnership aligns with the Indian government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative.
AVPL International has committed an initial investment of ₹5–6 crore into research and development for the project, signaling strong industry commitment toward long-term innovation in defense tech and aerospace AI.
“This mission is not just about building drones,” said the CEO of AVPL International. “It’s about creating a secure, self-reliant digital defense infrastructure that India can call its own. We’re proud to lead this transformative journey with IIT Ropar.”
IIT Ropar’s Director echoed the sentiment, stating, “This initiative is a strategic leap for India’s technology ecosystem. By combining advanced AI, robotics, and indigenous design, we are setting a new benchmark for innovation and national capability.”
Beyond its defense implications, the initiative is expected to fuel economic growth, generate high-tech jobs, and elevate India’s stature in the global drone market. With full-spectrum UAV development, this partnership could position India as a global hub for drone exports, reduce import bills, and open new frontiers in agriculture, disaster management, and logistics automation.
The IIT Ropar–AVPL alliance is not only a boost to technological sovereignty but also a bold signal that India is ready to lead in next-gen aerospace innovation.
