ROME /Italy, 5 July 2025: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will participate in the AI for Good Summit 2025, scheduled from July 8 to 11 in Geneva, to advocate for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable applications of artificial intelligence in global food systems.

Organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in collaboration with the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), the event will bring together global experts in technology, policy, and ethics to examine how AI can accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

FAO’s message this year, built around the theme “AI with Purpose, AI with Equity,” will underscore the need to place smallholder farmers and climate-resilient practices at the centre of agricultural AI innovation. Director-General Dongyu Qu will address the summit’s opening session on July 8, highlighting the opportunities of machine learning, intelligent irrigation, and satellite-based analytics for advancing food security.

The FAO will also lead a workshop on July 9 focusing on GeoAI and foundational models for agriculture, covering applications ranging from soil mapping to tracking seasonal crop changes in real time. A separate session on July 11 will explore global standards and ethical frameworks to ensure AI in agriculture is responsible, safe, and scalable for both smallholders and large agribusinesses.

FAO’s engagement reflects a growing effort to bridge innovation and governance, ensuring that transformative technologies do not leave the world’s most vulnerable farmers behind. Officials noted that artificial intelligence can help predict pest outbreaks, strengthen climate resilience, and boost productivity, but that it must be governed carefully to avoid bias and support data sovereignty.

The summit is expected to serve as a critical platform for aligning AI-driven innovations with the e-agriculture action lines under WSIS, strengthening knowledge societies and building global capacities to sustainably transform food systems.
