Maharashtra to compensate farmers hit by rain damage

May 31, 2025

Farmers in Maharashtra will receive compensation after unseasonal rains damaged crops, homes, and livestock across multiple districts in April and May.

MUMBAI, 31 May 2025: Farmers in Maharashtra whose crops, homes, and livestock were affected by unseasonal rains and storms during April and May will receive government compensation following a damage assessment, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule announced on Friday.

Speaking during a review visit to Amravati district in Vidarbha, Bawankule confirmed that immediate financial relief would be offered to affected farmers. "Officials have been instructed to conduct panchnamas (damage assessments) and submit proposals urgently. We will expedite fund allocation and ensure timely disbursement," he stated.

The April rains impacted 1,174 villages, damaging 794 hectares of crops including banana, orange, papaya, onion, and wheat, causing estimated losses of ₹2.83 crore. In May, extreme weather extended the damage to 325 more villages, affecting over 13,639 hectares with crops such as moong, sesame, jowar, and lemon suffering severe damage.

The minister emphasized that the compensation process was a top priority. "Rapid support is critical. District collectors and divisional commissioners have been directed to treat this with urgency," he said.

Beyond crop loss, the unseasonal storms also caused loss of life and property. In May, three people were killed by lightning, while 741 houses and several livestock shelters were damaged. In April, 18 houses were partially damaged and one was destroyed.

Livestock losses included 29 small and 12 large animals. Bawankule confirmed that ex-gratia aid was being processed for the families of the deceased, and livestock compensation was being arranged for affected owners.

“We are committed to ensuring that all impacted individuals—farmers, homeowners, and animal rearers—get the support they deserve without delay,” the minister reiterated.
