CHANDIGARH, 9 August 2023: In a joint effort to combat the environmental challenges posed by crop residue burning and to cultivate eco-consciousness among youth, S M Sehgal Foundation has partnered with Walmart Foundation and Flipkart Foundation.
The collaborative project was officially unveiled in Chandigarh, with the Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, receiving project details.
Recognizing the detrimental impacts of crop residue burning on soil health, human well-being, and the environment, the initiative funded by Walmart Foundation aims to create direct benefits for 15,000 farmers across 100 villages. By training farmers in adopting sustainable practices, including the utilization of a super seeder for crop residue management and the promotion of short-duration paddy varieties, the project seeks to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and enhance soil health, ultimately boosting crop productivity.
The Flipkart Foundation's grant complements the effort by raising awareness and fostering eco-consciousness among 5,000 children and youth across 60 villages that have been particularly affected by crop residue burning. Empowering young individuals to be change catalysts within their families and communities is a pivotal aspect of this endeavor.
Working closely with grassroots communities, the project is designed to encourage the adoption of alternative practices that mitigate the need for crop burning. The engagement of young people in this transition towards sustainable agriculture is a significant aspect of the project's vision. S M Sehgal Foundation collaborates with various stakeholders, including research institutions, academia, and social enterprises, to create a comprehensive support network aimed at promoting environmentally-friendly practices.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar remarked, "The Government of Haryana is committed to finding viable solutions for crop stubble management to ensure air quality is improved for better health and well-being." He extended his appreciation to Walmart Foundation, Flipkart Foundation, and S M Sehgal Foundation for their vital roles in these impactful projects.
Julie Gehrki, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Walmart Foundation, emphasized their commitment to supporting smallholder farmers and improving livelihoods through sustainable farming techniques. Rajneesh Kumar, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Flipkart, highlighted the significance of empowering communities and young students as agents of change, thereby contributing to a greener and more prosperous future.
Anjali Makhija, Trustee and Chief Executive Officer of S M Sehgal Foundation, underscored the uniqueness of the project, which includes engagement with women, children, and youth. She stated, "Farmers will receive support to improve soil health, increase productivity through education on the judicious use of fertilizers, appropriate seed variety, adoption of micronutrients, and diversification into sustainable crops and varieties."
The partnership signifies a collaborative stride toward sustainable agriculture, environmental consciousness, and a healthier future for Northern India. Through the integration of innovative solutions and community engagement, Walmart Foundation, Flipkart Foundation, and S M Sehgal Foundation are contributing to a greener and more prosperous tomorrow.
