NEW DELHI: In order to increase cattle population in the country, Indian agriculture ministry is setting up two national cattle breeding centres - National Kamdhenu Breeding Centres (NKBM).
The ministry will be investing $3.70 million (Rs 25 crore) each that will come up in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, Indian minister of state for agriculture & farmers welfare, Parshottam Rupala said in the upper house recently.
The funds have been released for both the centres and these new centres will be start operational in the coming months, it is learnt.
One centre will come up in Itarsi, Hoshangabad in Northern region of India and another one will be established in Chintaladevi, Nellore in Southern region of India, the minister adds.
Under Rashtriya Gokul Mission, all the bull mother farms available with State governments and State Implementing Agencies/ State Livestock Development Boards are covered for modernization and strengthening of existing infrastructure.
To strength and modernise bull mother farms
Looking towards the status of the farms and to meet demand of disease free high genetic merit bulls Government of India is undertaking strengthening and modernisation of bull mother farms under National programme for Bovine Breeding & Dairy Development (NPBBDD) and Rashtriya Gokul Mission (part of NPBBDD).
In addition this Government has initiated massive progeny testing and pedigree selection programme under NDP-I to meet shortage of quality bulls at semen stations.
India’s bovine population
India has the largest bovine population in the world owned by largely small and marginal farmers.
Dairying is an activity that is a source of income for the 60 million rural households that own, on an average, a herd size of 2-3 milch animals.
With 199 million cattle and 105 million buffaloes; the Nation has 14 per cent of the world cattle population and 53 per cent of the world buffalo population.
