Amul's RS Sodhi elected as MD at International Dairy Federation

The International Dairy Federation (IDF) unanimously elected R S Sodhi, managing director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) that sells Amul branded products in India, to its board during the general assembly held on 1 June, according to media reports.

AHMEDABAD, 3 JUNE 2021: The International Dairy Federation (IDF) unanimously elected R S Sodhi, managing director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) that sells Amul branded products in India, to its board during the general assembly held on 1 June, according to media reports.

IDF is an international non-governmental, non-profit association and represents the global dairy sector. The federation ensures that the right policies, standards, practices, and regulations monitor the production of dairy products globally. It has over 1,200 qualified dairy experts in 43 member countries.

“It is an honour for me to represent the world’s largest milk producing country and contribute to promoting Sustainable Goals of dairying and also meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," the new managing director added.

The business turnover of GCMMF has grown by 390 percent from INR 8,005 crore in 2009-10 to INR 39,238 crore throughout 2020-21.

IDF members are National Committees generally constituted by dairy organizations in each country. The National Committee represents its country. India is represented by the National Committee (INC) of the IDF. The Secretary (ADF), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India is the President of the INC-IDF and NDDB, as its Secretariat, coordinates its activities, GCMMF said in a statement, the report added.

Sodhi is alumni of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA). He joined GCMMF in the year 1982 after completing his post-graduation from IRMA.

Collective approach

India’s cooperative method constitutes a vital technique by which hundreds of thousands of dairy farmers are being empowered to have a degree enjoying area out there and get a good share of the worth of milk. “Dairying is the growth engine of our farm sector. It is not only about providing nutrition to consumers but also about ensuring a sustainable livelihood for our dairy farmers,” Sodhi added.

The spectacular growth and self-sufficiency within the dairy sector have been made potential by the concerted efforts of the dairy farmers, the Government of India, NDDB, and plenty of different stakeholders.

The world dairy sector is poised to play a necessary position in the direction of meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goal geared toward eliminating starvation by 2030.
